ManualManual

How it is laid out

  • Each button is a section; press it again for its next page (the dots at the top say which). SELECT is your hand on the tape's reel: turn it clockwise and the tape runs faster (higher), the other way slower (lower, darker); the faster you turn, the more, up to 2 semitones; let go and the motor brings it back. A flick of the wrist and the tape catches. (The idea is GHOULBOX's crank.)
  • On every page, KNOB 1–4 do what the screen's aluminium plate says, with their names and values. On FX pages the fourth is always MIX.
  • PRESETS: the sound, on any page: A FLUTE, B CHOIR, C CELLO, D VIBES, E PIANO (a track selector, as on the M400: it stops at A and at E; the piano: SLOOP's LOFI KEYS). ALGORITHM: the tempo, on any page.

The sections

  • HOME · PLAY: TONE, PITCH (semitones), ATTACK, RELEASE: each sound keeps its own (or one for all: SETUP's second page). Already on PLAY, HOME steps to the next sound.
  • SEL · LAYER: a second sound over the one PRESETS chose, on another track of the same tape: SOUND (OFF, A, B, C, D, E), MIX (between the two), OCTAVE, DETUNE. On LAYER, SEL again changes the SOUND.
  • LFO · LOFI: TAPE (WOW, FLUTTER, DRIVE: from clean to fat saturation, as a JHS 424 cassette preamp, HISS) and WEAR (AGE: a copy of a copy, the band narrows and the copying deck adds its hiss and flutter; DROPOUT; DRIFT: every key its own tuning, up to ±25 ct; CRUSH: bits and rate).
  • FX: VIBRATO (RATE, DEPTH, TONE, MIX: half way it is a chorus), ECHO (TIME, REPEATS, TONE, MIX), REVERB (SIZE, TONE, TYPE: HALL, after Felucca's, or PLATE, Dattorro's, MIX).
  • EDIT · EQ: SPEAKER, Felucca's SPEAKER EQ: FLAT, LOWCUT (the lows below ~110 Hz out) or BASS+ (below ~220 Hz out, and the bass the small speaker cannot play heard through its harmonics); and HIGHCUT (above ~5 kHz out: the tapes end at 5.5 kHz, so the hiss and CRUSH's grit). FLAT for headphones, the line out and USB. Hold EDIT (0.6 s): FLAT; hold it again within 5 s: as it was.
  • GLO · SETUP: LENGTH (a note lasts as long as you hold it, or 8 s as on an M400), SCREEN (the old-tape look, or clean), COLOUR (the screen's colour, after your FM-1's buttons: MINT, BLUE, PURPLE, ORANGE, GREY, BLACK). The screen explains each one as you turn it. GLO again: SOUNDS, PLAY OWN (each sound its own PLAY, as it comes) or SHARED (one for all), and every sound's PLAY in a table.
  • ARP: switches it on and opens its page: MODE, RATE, OCTAVES, GATE. SEQ: 16 steps of up to 4 notes: LENGTH, GATE, STEP, SWING.
  • PLAY starts and stops the sequencer; REC records (stopped: step by step, where SEL is a rest and SEL held clears the pattern; running: what you play goes into its step).
  • Hold LFO (0.6 s): LOFI out / in. Hold FX: the effects out / in (the echo and the reverb ring out). Each on its own, the EQ stays; the button is lit while its section is in, dark while out, and blinks while you are in its section.
  • ENV · HOLD: the notes stay; the next chord replaces them. Hold ENV (0.6 s): HALF SPEED, the tape at half speed (an octave down, twice as long), as the M4000D's switch. OCT−/OCT+. SAVE (it also saves by itself).

Computer keyboard

  • Bottom row Z…/ = white keys F3 to A4, the black ones on S D F H J L ;.
  • Top row Q…Y = B4 to G5, black ones on 1 3 4 6.
  • Esc HOME, 7 LOFI, 8 FX, 5 EQ, 2 SETUP, 9 ARP, 0 SEQ.
  • ↑ ↓ sound, ← → octave, Space PLAY, Enter REC, Shift HOLD, Backspace LAYER. Hold 7 or 8 to take LOFI or FX out.

Mouse and MIDI

  • Drag a knob up / down, or use the wheel over it. Drag across the keys for a glissando.
  • Connect MIDI: a MIDI keyboard plays MEL (any channel), with sustain pedal, mod wheel (vibrato) and pitch bend (the motor, ±2).
  • The settings are kept in this browser, as the FM-1 keeps them in its memory.

  • FX: VIBRATO (RATE, DEPTH, TONE, MIX: a mitad es un chorus), ECHO (TIME, REPEATS, TONE, MIX), REVERB (SIZE, TONE, TYPE: HALL, after Felucca's, or PLATE, Dattorro's, MIX).
OCT−/OCT+. SAVE (también guarda solo).

Teclado del ordenador

  • Fila de abajo Z…/ = teclas blancas de F3 a A4, con las negras en S D F H J L Ñ/;.
  • Arriba Q…Y = B4 a G5, negras en 1 3 4 6.
  • Esc HOME, 7 LOFI, 8 FX, 5 EQ, 2 SETUP, 9 ARP, 0 SEQ.
  • ↑ ↓ sonido, ← → octava, Espacio PLAY, Enter REC, Shift HOLD, Retroceso LAYER.
